Castel Sant'Angelo, Veduta di Roma
A building between antiquity, papacy and baroque power staging - Giovanni Battista Piranesi has not only captured the Castel Sant'Angelo in this copper engraving, but also a whole sense of the world: Rome as the stage of history.
Here, the ancient mausoleum of Hadrian, later expanded into the fortress of the popes, rises as a monumental silhouette above the Tiber. The bridge, animated by passers-by, connects not only banks - but also centuries.
